Naggar
lies 550 km north of Delhi, the capital of India, in the State
of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated in the Kullu Valley between
the towns of Kullu and Manali. This is the heart of the Western
Himalayas, in the Pin Parjal Ranges. The Rohtang Pass (5500
meters), 70 km north of Naggar, forms the gateway to the high
desert of the Tibetan Plateau. The Beas River, which runs
through this beautiful valley, rises in the Rohtang Pass.
As Naggar is elevated at 1760 meters, it offers stunning views
of the high mountain passes, steep forested hillsides, river
torrents and gorges, isolated villages, fertile riverbanks
and snowy peaks of the Himalayan Ranges
Naggar
This
extremely picturesque lovely little village has managed to
retain its unique cultural heritage. It has recently been
selected as one of the few Heritage Villages in India. Naggar
was once the capital of an ancient Rajput Kingdom, hence the
unique Naggar Castle. Built in the 16th Century, it is now
testimony of the ancient heritage of Naggar.
Hindu
Temples, thousands of years old, lie scattered around including
the grey sandstone temples of Shiva-Shakti, Lord Krishna and
Lord Vishnu. Besides these, you can admire the pagoda shaped
shrines of goddesses Tripura Sundri and Chamunda.
It
is no wonder that artists such as the eccentric Russian painter
and philosopher Prof. Nicholas Roerich chose this traditional
and peaceful Hindu village as his retreat. Here, he produced
some of his finest work that is still on display in his Estate.
