Jungle lore birding lodge

A cacophony of birds.
A cloudy mist brushes your face.
Daybreak at Jungle Lore.

A holiday at the Birding Lodge entails jungle walks through lush oak and pine woods, an encounter with wild goral, lammergeyers, woodpeckers and much more

Location

Jungle Lore Birding Lodge lies 15 kilometers away from Nainital in Pangot. Nainital, Kilbury and Pangot have the richest oak, pine and rhododendron forest in the area. This green belt supports an enormous variety of Himalayan bird life. It begins at Corbett National Park and extends right up to Binsar covering Pangot & Kilbury areas. More than 580 species of birds have been recorded in this belt.

Accommodation

The lodge has 2 well-furnished and tastefully designed cottages. One has a double bed and the other one has a futon bed. We provide camp cots for additional guests. Both cottages have attached baths which provide all modern amenities. The design provides good ventilation and the roofs give good insulation in cold weather. The sit-out of each cottage has valley view. The bird feeders are kept outside each cottage to attract local birds. They do not host more than 6-8 birders at a time.

The third cottage is being built in local style with local materials and is expected to be ready by June,2001. We have camping tents with floor bedding. These will have a common toilet with hot and cold running water. For those in search of relaxation there is a well equipped library and quiet jungle sit-outs nearby. The surrounding jungle offers excellent bird walks. Food is grown organically on their land and they serve both Indian and western dishes. They provide purified drinking water.

Activities

There are many walking trails through the surrounding jungle. You can choose your own trail. One of the popular walks is from the Kilbury forest rest house to Pangot or to China Peak, a 4-hour bird walk.

You can go through the forest or along the main road, which rarely sees vehicles pass by. The oak, pine, bamboo, cedar, rhododendron and other conifers make the walk delightfully beautiful and refreshing. The undergrowth is as fascinating with varieties of fern and moss breaking through the rich soil.

The forest gets thicker as you walk further. The trickle of fresh water streams enriches the habitat. Look for forktails. You can often spy wildlife around the streams. A host of birdlife inhabits this world. An absolute dream for a birdwatcher, this walk is a must.
