Welcome to a very extraordinary world
In the North Indian state of Uttaranchal , about 11 km. from Ramnagar town and just 2 km. short of Dhela Forest Rest House, along the southern periphery of the Corbett National Park is Jim's Jungle Retreat . A retreat is a place that allows you to get away from it all and Jim's Jungle Retreat allows you to do just that. This Unit of Corbett Country Hotels is the labour of love of Mr.. Inder Pratap Akoi whose love affair with Corbett park started at a very early age. Jim's Jungle Retreat reflects his love of nature and is an ideal getaway from the trappings of urban life without depriving the visitor of the bare necessities of life. Our in-house naturalist Imran Khan brings a wealth of technical and scientific knowledge about the flora and fauna of the region.

Along the southern periphery of the Park about 11 Km. from Ramnagar town and just 2 Km. short of Dhela Forest Rest House, is Jim’s Jungle Retreat, surrounded by a reserved forest. Abutting the jungle on two sides are situated 12 huts, unique in their construction. Built with local materials, mainly, they are comfortable, with all modern- conveniences, yet simple, and close to nature in design. The huts have attached modern bathrooms, the rooms are spacious and have air conditioning. There is a private verandah to sit out on to enjoy the sights and sounds of the jungle. Slide shows and wild life films are projected in the thatched dining area before or after dinner. The Retreat also has a swimming pool. The Cuisine is an mixture of the “Raj” and the present. Some evenings you could even walk out to a surprise Indian Barbeque, hosted in true Shikar camp style. In all, an unforgettable experience for the “First Timer” and a nostalgic journey down memory lane for the “Old Timer”. |

We offer three accommodation styles, totaling 22 residences, designed with a focus on aesthetic, comfort and of capturing the area's history.
These include safari tents, jungle cottages and lodges borrowing from their architectural past - old forest bungalows and safari tents.
Luxuriant fabrics, fine linen and subtle detailing create a comfortable and sophisticated environment. Century-old lithographs and plates of Indian hunting scenes frame walls. The furniture is designed with extensive use of local craftsmanship and material and each uniquely-styled residence inspires charm and exclusivity.
Our Safari Tent offers an alternative wilderness experience with its spacious construction and attractive camp-style furnishing. The air-conditioned tents offer modern conveniences, an ensuite bathroom, running hot and cold water and a sit-out deck.

The Jungle Cottage borrows from the construction style of our neighboring Gujjar community, with sloping thatched roofs and mud-colored exteriors, while the rooms – living, bedroom, dressing and bath - offer Raj-inspired living. A wrap-around veranda, birdsong and privacy are your personal luxuries.
The Jungle Family Cottage contains a second bedroom for children. All inclusions from the cottage apply in the family suite as well.
Finally, the Jungle Lodge is our newest addition. At a 15-foot elevation they offer spectacular views of the jungle, Shivalik hills and the seasonal riverbed that hosts deer, wild hog and the occasional tiger or elephant. 10 feet wide wrap-around verandas, plush interiors that encourage you to unwind, solar geysers and rain showers, all form part of the newest experience in Corbett. |

Climate
There are three distinct seasons: Cold (November to February), Hot (March to mid-June) and Rainy (mid-June to October). Mean monthly maximum temperatures range from 26*C in January to 44*C in June, and minimum temperatures from 2*C in January to 21*C in August, based on data for 1980-1984. Annual rainfall varies from 1400mm in the outer hills to 2800mm in the upper hills, with 1500-1600mm in the main Ram Ganga Valley . Conditions are humid throughout the year, relative humidity rising to 98% in the monsoon and seldom falling below 57% even in the driest period (November). A wind locally known as 'dadu' blows down the valley from about 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. , lowering the night temperature. In the hot season, it is followed by a hot wind blowing up-valley from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. During this season a thick haze of suspended dust develops which is only cleared by thunderstorms.

Being green is a continuous process and can involve making some difficult choices. And some fine balancing. Do we add washing machines to the property or use the local dhobi? Is it wise to bring food produce from hundreds of miles away? Would a local substitute suffice?
When at the retreat, please ask us to show you the various programs we’ve undertaken to keep ourselves environmentally responsible. We’d be happy to assist you with any information we can provide.
Water management
Wash and bath water is treated through a natural filtration process called Root Zone Treatment. The water is diverted first through baffled chambers for partial degradation and treatment, finally passing through the root zone of nitrogen fixing plants like Canae indica. Odorless water collected is then used on the campus grounds. This treatment plant will be extended to the entire property soon.
With the majority of structures covered in thatch, wherever possible, we have undertaken rain water harvesting by using the property’s tin roofs, collecting its run-off through pipes and into an underground tank. A majority of this water is used to recharge the area’s ground water.

Solid wast management
Waste is segregated first into non-degradable and bio-degradable. Plastic, glass and metals are recycled through local rag pickers.
Near zero use of polythene for purchases.
Bio-degradable waste is treated in a compost pit at the edge of the property. Mixture is then used as plant manure.
Energy conservation
Our kitchen, jungle lodges and spa all use solar geysers for hot water. Solar geysers will be extended to the entire property.
CFL bulbs are used on street lighting as well as inside lighting wherever possible. CFL’s are disposed of in an environmentally secure manner after use. They utilize less energy and last significantly longer than a traditional bulb.
Our room literature encourages you to be careful of water usage, to reuse towels if possible, and to switch off the mains to the electricity in your residence. A mains switch is located on your lodging’s exit.
Awareness programs & sponsorships
On world environment day the retreat’s staff encouraged village Dhela to ‘clean up.’ Dustbins were distributed widely – recycled canister tins painted olive green – to nearly every household, with waste management benefits explained.
The Lotus Flower Trust, an international NGO, is building The Jim Corbett Environmental School at village Patrani, not far from the retreat. Jim’s Jungle Retreat will sponsor two teachers, in Computer Science and English, for the school once it is functioning. It is to be a middle school with around 9 teachers.

In order to enjoy your stay here, it is important that you pack and plan accordingly. There are three distinct seasons: Cold (November to February), Hot (March to mid-June) and Rainy (mid-June to October), and each demands different clothing.
If visiting in the Cold season pack woolens and bring along a wind-breaker. Mornings and evenings, especially during game drives and elephant rides can be very cold.
In the Hot season, loose cotton clothes are advisable, while on nature walks wear long trousers so that the thorny undergrowth does not scratch you. Sensible walking shoes are the order of the day in all seasons.
If visiting the retreat in the rainy season, a proper raincoat is far more useful than an umbrella. Always pack a spare pair of shoes to plan for unexpected rain.

In case you have a particular medical condition it is essential that you pack your medicines. Ramnagar does have chemist shops but specialist medicines are not always available. Mosquito repellant is a must, especially in the rainy season.
Remember you’re in the jungle so little creatures could be visitors at the retreat. The staff is trained to remove any unwanted wanderers, but please be vigilant.
Finally, don’t forget to pack you camera.
Getting Here
The retreat runs along the southeast border of Corbett Tiger Reserve, about 13 km from Ramnagar town in the state of Uttarakhand. We are open throughout the year, with access to the Jhirna tourism zone during the monsoon when the rest of the park closes.
