For the sightseer, it is a wonderful amalgam of temples, churchyards, shopping areas – with the skyline frequently dominated by the huge cardboard cut-out of film stars and political leaders. The Marina Beach, fringed with palms and casuarinas, is ideal for long strolls and picnics. The British influence goes back to the mid-17th century, when they began building Fort St. George. Today, it houses the Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. Inside the fort, many ancient buildings still stand, including St. Mary's Church, which was consecrated in 1680. It is India 's oldest surviving British construction.
Mahabalipuram
Built in the 7th century, this ancient Pallava port is today the site of several antique sculptural marvels. Originally known as Mamallapuram, it lies 60 km away from Chennai. The only remaining shore temple is a spectacular two-spired shrine which is unique in that it houses shrines for both Vishnu and Shiva.
