Kumbhalgarh, an imposing fort built in 1458 AD set amid massive ramparts and surrounded by hundreds of temples, the creation of one of Mewar’s legendary heroes Rana Kumbha and the birthplace of the legendary warrior of Mewar Maharana Pratap. This fort was the second-most important fort for the Maharana’s of Mewar, the famous erstwhile rulers. Today, the wall encompassing the fort is known to be the second -longest wall after The Great Wall of China. The fort has seven grand gates and ramparts, one within the other. Rounded bastions and soaring towers add to its grandeur. The last gate or the Nimboo Pol has fascinating chambers within. There is an array of old palaces within the fort and Badal Mahal, the highest of all the palaces offering glorious views of the countryside. Built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, it has beautiful apartments painted with pastel-coloured murals.

Kumbhalgarh, along with five other forts in Rajasthan was recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in June 2013. Quite astonishingly, there are around 360 ancient temples, as well as palace ruins, step wells, and cannon bunkers inside it.

Entry to the fort is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily. There’s an interesting sound and light show at 6.45 p.m. everyday at the fort which is a highlight of Kumbhalgarh experience.

Kumbhalgarh Safari- Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a major attraction for the tourists coming to Udaipur. It surrounds the fort and is spread over an area of 586 km. Spreading across the Aravalli Range, Kumbhalgarh sanctuary covers parts of Rajsamand, Udaipur and Pali districts. The sanctuary makes home to many endangered species of wildlife. The sanctuary provides natural abode to many creatures like Wolf, Leopards, Sloth bear, Hyena, Jackal, Jungle cat, Sambhar, Nilgai, Chausingha (the four horned antelope), Chinkara and Hare. In fact, Kumbhalgarh is the only sanctuary of Rajasthan, where you can trace wolf engaged in its activities.

This sanctuary inhabits more than forty wolves in number. In the summers, one can easily find pack of wolves strolling around water sources in the sanctuary. If you find your interest in birds, then here you can see a nice variety of birds too. In the park, you can see Grey Jungle Fowl, which is usually inhibited. Peacocks and Doves also gain attention by their own charm. Apart from this, birds like Red Spur Owls, Parakeets, Golden Oriole, Bulbul, Dove, Grey Pigeons and White Breasted Kingfisher are traceable near the water holes.
