Tucked
away in the age-old Aravali hills of Rajasthan, the 18th century Devi Garh
Fort Palace, in the village of Delwara commands one of the three main
passes into the valley of Udaipur. Sajja Singh, who hailed from the neighboring
state of Gujarat, was awarded this strategically significant principality, in
recognition of his bravery and loyalty to Maharana Pratap
against the Mughal emperor Akbar, at the battle of Haldighati (1576). The
actual construction of the fort palace started only in the 1760s, under
Raghudev Singh II, with further additions being made to the structure by the
rulers who followed. The palace was absorbed into the state of Rajasthan in
the 1960s, and was subsequently abandoned. Today, after years of restoration
and reconstruction, Devi Garh has regained its past glory. An imposing and
impressive structure, it is now a unique all-suite boutique hotel, with 23
suites and 6 tents. Devi Garh stands, quite literally, in two worlds: the
traditional and the modern. Its ambience is an eclectic mix of skillfully
crafted designs, both old and new, functional and purely aesthetic. Local
materials like marble and semi-precious stones have been used in contemporary
designs to create an elegant beauty. Personalized service complemented by a
wide range of modern facilities goes towards making Devi Garh a comfortable
and attractive retreat..

Devi Garh are unique;
luxurious and beautiful,

called the Devi Garh
suite, has a swimming

of its own. Each suite
is embellished with
marble and semi-precious
stones, while the
public spaces are
designed around different
metals. Six tents
are also available
on request from October
to March.

Garh is a compact
accommodation unit
in itself, offering;

| Devi
Garh Suite |
 |
The
premium suite,
Devi Garh, consists
of two bedrooms
(the smaller one
being one of the
Palace suites).
The larger, Devi
Garh suite has
its own private
sun deck, Jacuzzi
and kitchenette.
The Devi Garh
suite and this
Palace suite share
a common, private,
black marble swimming
pool. The two
bedrooms are available
together or individually.
The concept behind
the design philosophy
of the Devi Garh
suite is that
of 'Shiv'
and 'Shakti'
- the male and
female energies,
embodied in Shiva,
the Hindu God
of destruction,
and Shakti, the
Goddess who personifies
power and the
destruction of
evil. Shiv represents
the male principle,
which acquires
the power to create
and destroy, in
conjunction with
Shakti, his consort,
who personifies
the divine power
of felinity.An
integral part
of the concept
is the image of
the bull Nandi,
the 'vahana' (vehicle)
of Shiv and also
a devotee of the
god.

| Aravali
Suites |
 |
 |
 |
|
|
One
of the Aravali Suites
is a duplex spread over
two levels; a loft-like
space accommodates the
bedroom and bathroom
above, while the lower
level houses the dining
and sitting areas. The
design of the suite
is based on the traditional
Indian motif - often
considered the most
beautiful in Indian
art - that of the lotus,
or kamal. The likeness
is repeated in the paintings
in the room, as well
as in the floor patterns
throughout the suite.
Furthermore, the suite
overlooks the spectacular
black marble 'kamal'
court, a courtyard which
again reflects the image
of a lotus in bloom.

| Palace
Suite |
|

|
|
The
palace suites are each
individually designed
gems - literally, for
their decor uses semi-precious
stones as inlays. Pristine
white marble forms an
effective base to offset
the rich and elegant
colors of Rajasthan,
with local skills being
used in a modern manner.
In every case, the patterns
of the furniture are
reflected and replicated
in the white terrazzo
forming the floor.All
the palace suites have
either balconies or
bay windows, which overlook
the lush green fields
and the mountains which
surround Devi Garh.
Each suite overlooks
the traditional 'aangans'
(courtyards) with contemporary
design.
|
|
|
In
every suite, the furniture
and the upholstery have
been especially selected
with a view to beauty
and functionality. Marble
combined with semi-precious
stones, such as malachite,
mother of pearl, jasper
and lapis lazuli, lends
an aura of luxury and
quiet elegance to the
rooms.
|
| The
Garden Suite |
|
The
garden suites at Devi
Garh each have their
own private lobby, garden
and tented terrace,
and overlook a vivid
rectangular field of
flowers. In each of
the suites, the décor
(based on local green
marble) brings the serenity
and beauty of the garden
inside. A carved marble
tree of life surmounts
the headboard of the
bed, adding to the effect
of a garden within the
room.

|
| The
Tents |
|
|
Traditionally
Rajputs were known for
their constant forays
into the wilderness-
either to wage war or
on hunting expeditions.
Setting up of portable
tents became one of
the most important rituals,
giving order and stability
to their nomadic lifestyle.
For
the adventurous traveler
of the 21st
century who is looking
to be closer to nature,
Devi Garh provides 6
tents at the foot of
the Palace, as an option.
These tents erected
from October to March,
recreate the desert
sky on the cloth ceiling
with patterns of clouds
and stars (made up of
shimmering mirrors).
In order to match comfort
levels with modern day
lifestyles, the tents
are provided with electricity,
heaters and fans, telephone
connection and an attached
marble bathroom, with
running water. By climbing
a few steps, one can
participate in all that
the palace has to offer
or alternatively enjoy
the simple from the
verandah of the tent-such
as soaking in the sunshine,
listening to the chirping
birds while gazing out
on to the lush green
vegetable garden laid
out in a Mughal pattern.
|
| Landscape |
|
One
of the most outstanding
features of Devi Garh
is its landscape design.
Using traditional
materials and motifs,
contemporary designs
have been created
which embody the confluence
between the old and
the new. The raw materials
used are all local,
with white marble
being used extensively
throughout the palace.
The two 12 feet high
standing blocks of
uncut white marble
at the entrance are
symbolic sculptural
representations of
the stone in its purest
form.
Devi Garh, like any
traditional Indian
dwelling, revolves
around courtyards;
five, to be precise.
Each courtyard blends
classical and modern
designs to achieve
a fusion, which is
peaceful yet intriguing.
The kamal court is
an interesting interpretation
of the traditional
lotus motif as a black
marble water-maze.
